Masterclass with Great Pottery Throwdown 2024 finalist!

Pottery workshops in Tamworth Castle with TV pottery finalist Create your own nature inspired ceramic tile Ticketed event, 2 June

Tamworth Borough Council is offering a pottery masterclass with 'The Great Pottery Throwdown' 2024 Finalist, David Short, on Sunday 2 June at Tamworth Castle.

TV throwdown finalist, David Short, will be at hand to teach budding pottery enthusiasts a ‘nature inspired’ ceramic tile workshop.

During the two-hour workshop, attendees can expect to learn how to carve, imprint, and use Sgraffito techniques to create their own illustrative creation on a clay tile.

Once the ceramic tiles are designed, they will be left to dry slowly and undergo their first firing. The tiles will be placed in a transparent glaze and fire them again. All decorative tiles will be packaged and posted to the workshop participant after six weeks.

The workshop is suitable for beginners aged 18 years and above. Tickets are priced at £30 per person, including tea, coffee, and biscuits. Two workshops are available to book on Sunday 2 June at 10am - 12 noon or 1pm – 3pm.

The workshops are part of a programme of community engagement activities funded by UK Shared Prosperity Funding.

Stephen Gabriel, Chief Executive for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Our recent heritage craft workshops and drop-in days have been very popular, and we’re excited to be offering pottery workshops led by a TV show finalist!

“We aim to continue exploring creativity as a way of engaging audiences with our wonderful Tamworth heritage and castle. We’re delighted that so many people have given us lots of positive feedback from our creative sessions that have taken place at the castle, Ankerside and the Castle Grounds.

“We are very lucky to open our castle doors to David Short. The castle will also be open on the weekend, so visitors can also explore what our historic building has to offer. (Admission fees do apply).”
