It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as snow arrives for the town’s lights swtich-on.

Snowy scenes created Christmas cheer in Tamworth town centre on Sunday (November 28), when thousands of people enjoyed an afternoon of snowy, festive entertainment for the whole family.

The yuletide season was kicked off in style with the greeting of real snow fall, food stalls, festive drinks, fairground rides, Snow Queen and King character stilt walkers, and a variety of live community performances from the stage in St Editha’s Square.

People flocked to the town centre as the snow began to fall, creating a truly magical setting to enjoy the free festive fun which culminated in the switching on of the lights just after 5pm. This year the switch-on itself was celebrated with a countdown from the D-Day Darlings accompanied on stage by the Mayor of Tamworth, Cllr Michael Oates.

The annual Christmas lights switch-on is organised Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts & Events team, and is another free community favourite in the town’s calendar of events which attracts thousands of people to the town to enjoy the celebrations each year.

The focal point for the afternoon of fun was the main stage in St Editha’s Square, featuring live performances from local groups – All Stars, Steps Dance School, RockSchool, Tamworth Pantomime Company, D-Day Darlings trio and Juniors, who ended the afternoon of free entertainment with some classic wartime and Christmas tunes.

Making its debut this year, Tamworth Castle was lit up with an animated We are Angels projection after the light switch-on, by Tamworth arts group New Urban Era, showcasing this and previous years’ entries along with children's Christmas themed artworks.

The outdoor entertainment to the Castle Grounds was also extended with a magical showing of the festive classic animated movie The Snowman, projected on the outside of the castle with the stunning backdrop of a crisp snowy setting.

Mayor of Tamworth, Michael Oates, said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is yet another popular event in Tamworth’s busy programme of free entertainment with a wide range of activities taking place throughout the town centre.

“Once again Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts & Events team did us proud with another fantastic and enjoyable afternoon of fun which really got everyone in the festive mood.  The square itself was buzzing with festive cheer with real snow making it truly magical.

“There was something for everyone to enjoy and it was such a delight to see our castle transformed with the projection of the We are Angels project and the Snowman film. It was great to see families and people of all ages enjoying themselves.”
